What is Pilates?

Pilates is a high-intensity but low-impact form of movement – it involves intense muscle work with minimal impact on the joints. It was devised by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, who referred to his repertoire of exercises as ‘contrology’ due to the emphasis placed on intentional, controlled, and slow movement. Though there are many exercises in Pilates’ classical repertoire, they are all underpinned by correct breathing, cervical alignment, rib and scapular stabilisation, pelvic mobility, and utilisation of the transverses abdominis (deep core muscles). My method draws on the classical repertoire and incorporates some more dynamic, modern elements to ensure a whole-body workout that is tailored to your abilities and needs.
Pilates reduces risk of injury, increases muscle strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, core strength and breath connection. Joseph Pilates used his method to rehabilitate soldiers injured in the First World War, strengthening not only their bodies, but also their minds. Pilates encourages improved posture and spinal alignment, which can alleviate lots of the physical pain that we experience in the modern world. It can have reformative and restorative benefits for the body if practiced correctly, as well as encouraging us to be present in our bodies and reducing anxiety as a result.
Pilates is a healer of the mind as well as the body, with low-impact, enjoyable movement encouraging the release of endorphins and dopamine. This boosts our mood and reduces anxiety.
Mat Pilates

My mat Pilates method includes use of minimal equipment, ones own bodyweight, and functional core strength. Each class is tailored to your personal needs and ability level, and we will progress the movements over time to build strength, stability, and flexibility.
Mat Pilates is a fabulous place for beginners to start and learn the correct posture and breathing style. That being said, many advanced Pilates practitioners stick to mat Pilates. Since a majority of this workout is centred around slow and controlled use of your own body weight, mat Pilates is an unparalleled way to reconnect and gain control over your body. Every movement is intentional, and the beauty of Pilates is in the mind-body connection it cultivates. If you want to feel elongated, flexible, stable, and strong, as well as centred, connected, grounded, and calm, mat Pilates is for you.
Equipment includes: mat, resistance band, light ankle weights, light hand weights, Pilates ball, magic circle, floor sliders.
1:1 sessions available in person (SW London) or via zoom.
Reformer Pilates

The reformer Pilates machine is one of the pieces of equipment created by Joseph Pilates. Reformer Pilates uses different levels of spring resistance to add more weight to the workout.
